Sam Amidon

Sam Amidon is one of the most sought-after musicians in the contemporary folk and roots music scene. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, fiddle, banjo, etc., as well as a vocalist/singer-songwriter. He was born in Vermont, USA (and currently lives in the UK).

His parents, Peter and Mary Alice, were both folk musicians, and Sam himself began playing the fiddle at the age of three. He absorbed traditional music such as Irish and Appalachian folk music in his daily life, and began performing in family groups from an early age.

At the age of 20, he released his first recording, the fiddle album Solo Fiddle, in 2001. He has since released folk albums on several indie labels, but his highly acclaimed collections of folk standards, All Is Well (2007) and I See the Sign (2010), which he produced with Icelandic producer Valgeir Sigurdsson, known for his work with Björk, among others.

Sam started to attract worldwide attention after the release of Bright Sunny South in 2013 from Nonesuch, a prestigious label that is considered the home of Americana music. This work is a sophisticated work in terms of sound, produced by inviting engineer Jerry Boys, who has worked on famous traditional rock albums. Many of the songs are traditional songs reinterpreted with modern performances, but it also includes some unexpected elements, such as a laid-back version of a Mariah Carey song.

His follow-up album, Lily-O, again teamed up with Sigurdsson and featured guest appearances by Bill Frisell, which also garnered attention. While his work predominantly consists of covers of old folk songs, The Following Mountain (2017) is composed almost entirely of original songs, and features Milford Graves on drums, Jimi Hendrix percussionist Juma Sultan, and Sam Gendel on saxophone, marking a new step forward as a songwriter.

In 2020, "SAM AMIDON" was released, and he again performed traditional songs with long-time members Shazad Ismaily and Chris Vattalaro, as well as musicians related to him, such as Bert Kohls (guitar), Sam Gendel (sax), Ruth Gullar (bass), and his wife, singer-songwriter Beth Orton, as a guest vocalist. He received praise from many quarters for his approach, which pursued chance and the fusion of sound through the improvisation of the performance and the chemistry of the performers.

Aside from the album work, we would like to pay attention to the expansion of live performances. Amidon is a musician who always finds new possibilities through collaboration. At the 2022 "Festival de Frue", he performed with Japanese members in "With String Quartet", and his collaborative session with Kakudo Mami also developed into a collaboration on "Soto wa Koame" from her latest album "Contact".

In 2024, Amidon has been performing live shows that have been enchanting to fans, such as performing with Appalachian duo Tatiana Hargreaves and Allison de Groot at Celtic Connection, the so-called "Sam+Sam+Sam" with Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, and a trio with Tom Gill and Philippe Melanson, who play in a two-man band. At the upcoming "Festival de Frue," he will be performing for the first time with Billy Martin, the drummer and greatest improviser of Medeski, Martin & Wood. It's a lineup that is impossible to simulate in your head, and is too much fun. Look forward to this unknown combination that will never go as planned, a FRUE premiere and a world premiere.

Billy Martin

One of the world's leading percussionists and improvisers, Billy Martin was born in New York in 1963. He is widely known for his work as a drummer and percussionist in the group Medeski, Martin & Wood (MMW), but his activities span the arts in general, including as an improviser himself, collaborating with a wide range of friends, and working as a composer, painter, and filmmaker, among others, whose work includes film scores.

Influenced by the diverse music scene of Manhattan, from Broadway to Brazilian nightclubs and the underground music scene, as well as the training he gained in the underground jazz scene of downtown New York, he began to distinguish himself as a percussionist in the 1980s, appearing in works and live performances by The Lounge Lizards and John Zorn, and in the 1990s, influenced by the downtown New York scene, he formed one of the world's leading improvisation trios, MMW.

Pirie Martin's playing style combines elements of classic R&B, funk, Latin and jazz, as well as a rhythm machine-like sense of timing that creates a unique groove. As a percussionist, his endless ideas, which allow him to use a wide variety of rhythm instruments and even toys as rhythm instruments, and his play, which is mixed with intellectual humor, always stimulates the curiosity of his audiences.

From 2018 to 2020, Billy released new works one after another. The duo work "Disappearing" (2018) with William Martin, the work "Meshes" (2019) with an orchestra and solo percussion composed of downtown NY artists, and "GUILTY" (2020) with a band ensemble of rhythms and bass riffs that he created almost by himself, with solo accompaniment by guests such as Marc Ribot and John Medeski, are all rhythm-based works, but each one has a completely different approach. He is also preparing to release the soundtrack for the new Netflix work "La Gran Seduccion".

Speaking of Billy at "Festival de Frue", the illy B's Organism Session in 2018 and the miraculous session with Yamandu Costa, which was too amazing to be called a surprise extra, are still talked about, but in 2024, in addition to a duo with Sam Amidon, "Miraculous Session Part 2" with DJ Olive & Amaro Freitas has been announced. Don't miss this moment that will definitely become "history"!
