Frith
Fred Frith is a pioneer of the extended electric guitar, a style of electric guitar playing that employs unconventional and original techniques.
He learned songwriting with Henry Cow, honed his songwriting skills with Art Bears, developed his talents as a multi-instrumentalist with Skeleton Crew and wowed audiences with Massacre, and has been in one or more bands since 1964, and continues to do all of them today.
During that time his works have been performed by a wide variety of groups and artists, including baroque and contemporary ensembles, string quartets, chamber orchestras and the ever-expanding field of semi-popular, if not popular, music.
Fred has also composed extensively for film and dance, and has taught improvisation for many years at Mills College in Oakland, California, and at the Conservatory of Music in Basel, Switzerland.
His lifelong passion for improvisation has led him to collaborate with artists who wouldn't necessarily call themselves improvisers, such as Brazilian drummer Maria Portugal, cellist Paula Sanches and bricochet extraordinaire Sudhu Tewari.
Fred is also the subject of the multi-award winning film "Step across the Border" by Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel.
