Sam Gendel & Sam Wilkes
The "innovative musical duo" Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes (Sam x Sam), who have perfectly embodied the term "artist in residence" for FRUE, are coming together again.
Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes are forward-thinking composers and multi-instrumentalists who have produced a vast amount of recorded and live output over the past year, with both projects receiving rave reviews.
As for Gendel, he has been working on new projects such as "AUDIOBOOK", which was fused with an art project at the end of last year, the mysterious new trio "Earth Flower", which is somewhere between jazz and indie rock, and "Hardy Boys" with composer Emile Mosseri. Furthermore, the reissue of the archive work "The Room" with Fabiano do Nascimento and the performance with Fabiano at Shibuya WWW X Duo in July that made everything past are still fresh in our memories.
During his visit to Japan in July, he collaborated with Argentine legend Juana Molina, and during his solo tour of Kyushu he performed a performance that went beyond the word "overwhelming," recreating a ensemble by himself. It seems that the intensity of his activities and his dedication to music have reached even greater heights.
Meanwhile, Wilkes has been releasing energetically. Following last year's ambient pop masterpiece "DRIVING," he released the album "Sam Wikes, Craig Weinrib, and Dylan Day" in July, which was born from a session with Craig Weinrib and Dylan Day. As you know, this formation is a trio that is an extension of the Sam Wilkes Quintet that was realized at "FESTIVAL de FRUE" in 2022.
While Gendel spans multiple genres, including jazz, avant-garde, ambient, and experimental pop, the two have released works with different styles, such as works in the pop field and groups with strong improvisational elements, but their regular meetings focusing on "saxophone and bass" have always brought about interesting musical developments.
The project "Music for Saxophone & Bass Guitar," which recorded the live performance that was the starting point, and its sequel "More Songs" began in 2017. The last time Sam x Sam performed in Japan was at "FESTIVAL FRUEZINHO" in 2022, and many of the performances from this event were recorded on "The Doober," which was released in May of this year.
After a two-year hiatus, Sam×Sam will reunite. Will they return to the basic format of "saxophone and bass" this time? Or will they show us a new view that removes restrictions? It is unclear, but the "new chapter" will definitely start here in Japan.
